How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

What decides whether ChatGPT names your business: crawler access, what the rest of the web says about you and pages it can quote. A practical plan, no tricks.

ChatGPT recommends a business when it can find it, confirm it from several places and quote something specific about it. There is no form to submit, and no setting that guarantees a mention. What you can control is whether ChatGPT is allowed to read you, whether the rest of the web agrees with what you say about yourself and whether your pages contain sentences worth repeating.

This guide covers each of those, in the order that makes the biggest difference, and how to check whether it is working.

Two ways ChatGPT knows about you

ChatGPT draws on two very different sources, and they move at very different speeds.

Training data Live search
What it is What the model learned before its knowledge cutoff Pages ChatGPT fetches while answering
OpenAI crawler GPTBot OAI-SearchBot
How fast changes show Months, at the next model release About 24 hours after a robots.txt change, per OpenAI
What you can influence this quarter Very little Almost everything in this guide

When someone asks “who should I hire for X in Y”, ChatGPT usually searches the web and composes its answer from what it finds. That live path is the one you can work on now.

Step 1: let OpenAI’s search crawler in

This is the most common unforced error we see. OpenAI’s crawler documentation is explicit: sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot “won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers”, although they may still appear as navigational links.

Check your robots.txt for a block like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Two details trip people up:

  • The two crawlers are independent. You can block GPTBot (training) and still allow OAI-SearchBot (search). Blocking training does not remove you from ChatGPT’s answers. Blocking search does.
  • Firewalls block bots that robots.txt allows. Bot protection on a CDN or host can reject OpenAI’s crawler even when robots.txt welcomes it. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges its crawlers use, so your host can allow them specifically.

Step 2: be findable beyond your own website

An assistant that recommends a business is making a claim on your behalf, so it looks for agreement. If the only source describing you as the best roofer in town is your own website, that is weak evidence.

What tends to corroborate a business:

  • Review platforms with a meaningful number of recent, genuine reviews.
  • Directories and listings relevant to your trade or industry.
  • Press and local news that describe what you do.
  • Comparison and “best of” pages written by independent sites.
  • Community discussion where real customers mention you by name.

For local businesses this got concrete in 2026. In July, Yelp confirmed a deal licensing its “reviews, photos and other business information” to OpenAI, which ChatGPT will use in its answers, as Axios reported. If your Yelp profile is unclaimed, thin or out of date, that is now a direct input to what ChatGPT says about you.

Step 3: make your facts agree everywhere

Assistants reason about your business as an entity: one thing, with one name, one set of services, one phone number, one service area. When your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp listing and LinkedIn page disagree, you look like several uncertain things instead of one confident one.

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, which analyzed more than 350,000 locations, put it bluntly: “Inconsistent or incomplete listings reduce AI confidence and can remove brands from consideration entirely” (SOCi, January 2026).

Make one canonical version of your details and copy it everywhere:

Field Keep identical across
Business name Website, Google, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, social profiles
Phone and address or service area The same list
What you do, in one sentence About page, profile descriptions, directory bios
Services and prices you publish Website and every listing that has a services field
Hours, including holidays Everywhere hours appear

The same report found that the locations ChatGPT recommended averaged a 4.3-star rating. Reputation is not a nice-to-have in AI answers; it is a gate.

Step 4: write pages ChatGPT can quote

A model answering a question needs a sentence it can lift out and attribute. “We are passionate about delivering world-class service” answers nothing. “We repair residential roof leaks across Omaha, usually within 48 hours, and quote before starting” answers four questions at once.

On your most important pages:

  • Put the answer first. State what you do, for whom, where and roughly what it costs in the first paragraph.
  • Use the words buyers use. Headings phrased as the questions people ask an assistant: “How much does a roof inspection cost in Omaha?”
  • Be specific. Numbers, timeframes, service areas, named methods. Specific sentences are quotable; vague ones are not.
  • Keep it current. Dated pages with accurate “last updated” dates are easier to trust than undated ones.

Our CITE framework is a four-test checklist for exactly this.

Step 5: measure what ChatGPT says about you

You cannot improve what you have not measured, and no platform hands you this report. Build a short prompt set, run it regularly and write down what comes back:

  1. Discovery prompts: “Who are the best [service] providers in [city]?”
  2. Comparison prompts: “[You] or [competitor], which is better for [need]?”
  3. Brand prompts: “What does [your business] do?” and “Is [your business] any good?”

Run each one several times, because answers vary, and record whether you were named, how you were described and who was named instead. Our guide to measuring AI visibility covers the method in detail.

You can also see the traffic. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ notes that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so in Google Analytics those visits appear under that source.

What does not work

  • Paying for organic placement. OpenAI’s publisher guidance says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and the requirement it describes is crawler access. It does not describe a paid route into the answers. Anyone selling a guaranteed recommendation is selling something nobody controls.
  • Fake or incentivized reviews. Beyond being detectable, they are illegal in the US: the FTC’s rule banning fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024 and allows civil penalties for each violation (FTC).
  • Keyword-stuffed pages. Repeating “best plumber near me” gives a model nothing to quote and gives a reader a reason to leave.
  • A magic file. There is no file that makes ChatGPT recommend you. We cover the most-hyped one in llms.txt explained.

A 30-day plan

Week Do this
1 Check robots.txt and firewall rules for OAI-SearchBot. Run your prompt set and record the baseline.
2 Claim and complete Google, Yelp, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places. Make every field match.
3 Rewrite your top three service pages answer-first, with specific, quotable facts.
4 Start a steady review request habit with real customers. Re-run the prompt set and compare.

Expect the technical fixes to register within days and the reputation work to build over months. That is normal, and it is also why it is hard for a competitor to copy quickly.

Questions people ask

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business? Nothing OpenAI has published describes a paid route into its answers. Its guidance for publishers is about crawler access; beyond that, visibility comes from being corroborated and quotable.

How long does it take to start appearing? Crawler access changes can register within about a day. Changes in what the web says about you, such as reviews and listings, typically take weeks to months to show up consistently.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my visibility in ChatGPT? Not in search answers. GPTBot governs training; OAI-SearchBot governs search. OpenAI documents them as independent settings.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews? OpenAI has not published a full list of its local data sources. The Yelp agreement is the one confirmed publicly. Google reviews matter for Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode, which draw on Business Profile information.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question? Answers vary by session, wording, location and model version. That is why measurement needs repeated runs, not a single screenshot.
