Google Business Profile optimization checklist (GMB) for 2026
A complete Google Business Profile checklist: what ranks local results, the fields that matter, how to handle reviews and why it now feeds AI answers.
Your Google Business Profile, still widely called GMB after its old name Google My Business, is the single most important listing a local business has. It decides whether you appear in the map pack, and it is now a direct input to Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s guidance for those AI features tells site owners to keep “Business Profile information current” (Google Search Central).
This checklist works through every part of the profile in order of impact, based on what Google itself says about local ranking.
What Google says decides local rankings
Google is unusually open about this. Local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity” (Google Business Profile Help):
| Factor | Google’s definition | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | “How well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for” | Categories, services, description, accuracy |
| Distance | “How far each business is from the customer who’s searching” | Almost nothing, beyond an accurate address or service area |
| Prominence | “How well-known a business is” | Reviews, ratings, links and mentions across the web |
Google also states: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Anyone promising to buy you a map pack position is describing something Google says does not exist.
The checklist
1. Verification and ownership
- The profile is verified. Google lists verification first among its tips for local ranking, because it shows you are authorized to represent the business.
- The business owner holds the primary owner role. Agencies and staff get manager access, never ownership.
2. Business name
- The name is your real-world name, exactly as it appears on your signage and branding.
- No added keywords, cities, taglines or services.
This is the most common violation we see, and Google’s rules are explicit: “Including unnecessary information in your business name isn’t permitted” (Google’s guidelines). “Summit Plumbing” is fine; “Summit Plumbing Best Emergency Plumber Omaha” risks suspension.
3. Categories
- The primary category is the most specific one that describes your core business (“Roofing contractor”, not “Contractor”).
- Secondary categories are added only where genuinely true.
Google’s guidance is to “use as few categories as possible” and choose ones “as specific as possible, but representative of your main business”. Adding loosely related categories dilutes relevance rather than widening reach.
4. Address or service area
- Storefront businesses show a precise, real address.
- Service-area businesses (plumbers, cleaners, contractors) hide their address and list the areas they serve.
- No P.O. boxes or virtual offices. Google says these “aren’t acceptable” or are not eligible.
5. Hours
- Regular customer-facing hours are set.
- Special hours are added ahead of every holiday.
Wrong hours are the fastest way to lose a customer’s trust, and an assistant that tells someone you are open when you are closed is unlikely to recommend you twice.
6. Phone and website
- A local number you control, not a call-center or redirect number.
- The website link goes to the most relevant page, usually your homepage or a location page.
- The link is tagged so Google Analytics can separate profile traffic, for
example
?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp.
7. Services, products and description
- Every service you offer is listed, in the words customers use.
- The description states what you do, for whom and where, in plain sentences. No keyword lists.
- Prices or price ranges are added where you are comfortable publishing them.
Specific descriptions are what AI answers can quote. “Family-owned roofer repairing leaks and replacing asphalt roofs across Omaha since 2009” gives a model four facts. “Quality service you can trust” gives it none.
8. Photos and video
- Real photos of your premises, team, vehicles and finished work.
- New photos added regularly, not once at setup.
Google lists photos and videos among its own tips for improving local ranking.
9. Reviews
- A steady habit of asking every customer for a review, not bursts.
- Every review answered, especially the negative ones, calmly and specifically.
- No incentives in exchange for positive reviews, no reviews from staff or family, no bought reviews.
Reviews feed prominence directly, and they matter even more in AI answers. SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index found that the locations ChatGPT recommended averaged a 4.3-star rating (SOCi).
Fake or incentivized reviews are also illegal in the US. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024 and allows civil penalties per violation (FTC).
10. Consistency with the rest of the web
- The same name, address or service area, phone and hours appear on your website, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and major directories.
This step is outside the profile, and it is the one that affects AI answers most. SOCi’s research notes that “inconsistent or incomplete listings reduce AI confidence and can remove brands from consideration entirely”. Yelp now licenses its business information to OpenAI for ChatGPT, so a neglected Yelp listing is no longer a minor issue.
A monthly maintenance routine
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Reply to new reviews. Check for suggested edits from the public. |
| Monthly | Add fresh photos. Review services and prices for accuracy. |
| Before holidays | Set special hours. |
| Quarterly | Compare your details across Google, Yelp, Apple and Bing. Fix any drift. |
Profiles decay quietly. Members of the public and Google itself can suggest edits, and an unattended profile can end up with wrong hours or a wrong category without the owner noticing.
Questions people ask
Is Google My Business the same as Google Business Profile? Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile. “GMB” is still the term most people search for.
Can I put my city or main service in my business name? Only if it is genuinely part of your registered, real-world name. Otherwise Google’s guidelines do not permit it and it can get the profile suspended.
How many categories should I choose? As few as accurately describe your core business, with the most specific one as primary. Google’s own guidance says to use as few as possible.
Does my Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT? OpenAI has not published that it uses Google Business Profile data. It does affect Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the consistency it encourages helps everywhere. For ChatGPT, Yelp is the local source confirmed publicly.
How long does it take to rank in the map pack? Fixing errors and categories can show results within weeks. Prominence, built from reviews and mentions, takes months and keeps compounding.
